White willow bark (Salix babylonica) has a long history of use for reducing fever and pain. It was also used to treat inflammation by the ancient Egyptians. Native Americans are thought to have steeped willow bark in tea as a remedy for relief to fevers. More than 100 years ago, its active ingredient salicin was identified. White willow bark is a source of salicin and other salicylates compounds, which are similar in structure to aspirin (acetyl salicylic acid). The bark of the white willow tree is a source of salicin and other salicylates - compounds which are similar in structure to aspirin (acetyl salicylic acid). Native Americans are thought to have used ground willow bark and bark steeped for tea as a medicinal remedy for everything from pain relief to fevers. Today, white willow bark is often used as a natural alternative to aspirin - one of the most common uses in dietary supplements is as an adjunct for weight loss.
The white willow tree is found in Asia and certain parts of Europe. White willow bark extract has been used medicinally for hundreds of years. White Willow Bark Extract contains salicin, which the body converts to salicylic acid and has the same effect on the body as aspirin without any of the side effects. In fact, White Willow Bark Extract was the basis for the synthesis of aspirin. History of usage of White Willow Bark goes back as far as 500 BC when ancient Chinese healers began using it to control pain. Native Americans also discovered the value of the Willow tree for relieving pain from headaches and rheumatism and reducing fevers.
Salicin (C13H18O7) is an alcoholic beta-glycoside. It is closely related chemically to aspirin and has a very similar action in the human body. Used as an analgesic and, formerly, in veterinary practice, as a bitter stomachic, antirheumatic and analgesic.
The benefits of White Willow Bark extract today are that it is an anti-inflammatory, a fever reducer, an analgesic, an anti-rheumatic, and an astringent. Specifically, it helps to relieve headaches; helps to ease pain associated with inflammatory conditions like rheumatism, arthritis, and carpal tunnel syndrome; and helps to control fevers.
Studies have shown that if you feel better, you are more likely to want to stick to your weight loss plan and because of that, White Willow Bark can aid in your diet goals.
Willow bark is used to ease pain and reduce inflammation, and there is good evidence that it is effective as an analgesic and anti-inflammatory. Researchers believe that the chemical salicin, found in willow bark, is responsible for these effects. However, studies have identified several other components of willow bark which have antioxidant, fever-reducing, antiseptic, and immune-boosting properties. Some studies have shown willow is as effective as aspirin for reducing pain and inflammation (but not fever), and at a much lower dose. Researchers theorize that may be due to the other compounds in the herb. More research is needed.
